The Message of More---- Miss Mellie Rainbow aka Melony McGant
The great Sufi Master Hazrat Inayat Khan once said that “Every moment has its special message.” Today we are living in a time filled with special messages. How often do we pay attention? Do we always know when we get the message ? Do we get the message and ignore it because it’s not
convenient? Sometimes we do. I know I have. At one point or another God has sent us a message that we didn’t understand, pay attention to or ignored. Sometimes the message is a blessing. Sometimes it is a warning.
Often the consequences of getting a message, and not understanding is vital.
A few days ago I
was speaking to an old friend that I had met while living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is very dedicated to his family, and though they live in different states, he speaks to his Mother every morning. I told him that his Mom had been on my mind. Her kidneys had failed,
and now dialysis was now a part of her life several times a week. My friend answered by saying that his Mom has just moved after living in the same house for 35 years. “WOW that’s big” I stated. “Yes” he said “ but let me tell you why she had to move.”
He went on to tell me that a few months ago his mother had asked him a question about home retention. Home retention is a program for people in foreclosure. He asked his Mom was her house in foreclosure, and she said “Oh no---I was just curious”. A month after that conversation my friend discovered that his mother’s house was in fact in foreclosure and she had to move immediately. Scary isn’ t it.
Though this story is devastating, it does have a happy ending. My friends Mom
has moved into a brand new, much larger house. Her sister, her daughter and her two grandsons have moved with her as well. And she will have the support she needs. My friend has decided that he can provide more support if he moves back to the area. He will move in the next few months but make regular week-end visits until he moves.
“Every moment has it’s
special message.” Sometimes the message can be given in a one minute conversation? The message can be a whisper or it can be a cry for help that we don’t hear. We’ve got to listen better, and pay attention. I believe that God is speaking to us—to all of us in a big way! Just as in the case of my friend---- God is asking us to be more flexible and to make new adjustments in our lives. God is asking us to open our heart to love.
But everyday when we turn on the television, or read the newspaper we get another message--- a message of more. Our preoccupation with more has become for me unbearable. As I focus on Iraq, my heart cries at our need for violence, at our rationale for killing, at our thoughts of the inevitability of war, and economic collapse.
Painfully I address the lack of opportunity, literacy and safety for those in the United States , and extend my thoughts
globally. There is no reason or need for poverty of mind, body or spirit---other than the desire for a few to have MORE. More money, more stocks, more oil, more land, more killing, ---MORE.
And while some of us are asking for more, we have devastating earth changes that are affecting the world.
We haven’t
been paying attention and so God is speaking to us through natural disasters. A few years ago it was the Hurricane Katrina right here in the United States in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. We are still rebuilding, and thousands have lost their homes and have been
displaced. Then there was the Tsunami in Southern Asian. Each time the death toll is larger, the damage more severe.
At one point or another God has sent us a message that we didn’t understand, pay attention to or just ignored. Sometimes the message is a blessing. Sometimes it
is a warning. Often the consequences of getting a message, and not understanding is vital.
Within the last two weeks we’ve had a Cyclone Nargis in Myranmar which has resulted in 74,000 dead or missing and an earthquake in Central China with the official death toll at more than 22,000, and tens of thousands more still buried or missing. . We’ve got to listen better, and pay attention. God is speaking to us. The message that God is sending us is--- LOVE MORE / DO MORE.
God’s more is in direct relation to a desire for equity for all people, the sustainability of our Earth, and the healing of all disease. God’s more is hope, joy, compassion, and understanding. God’s more is a world filled with conscience intention and love.
God’s more is a request to ask that we honor our seniors, share them with our precious children and provide them with the best of ourselves.
God’s MORE is a dream of humility, respect
and diplomacy as we learn to interact with eachother heart to heart. God’s MORE is for us to vision and create a world of cooperation where we allow others the dignity of returning to their homelands instead of creating political obstacles to peace.
Yes today God is asking us to sing a melody of more---more understanding, more compassion, more willingness to share the fruits of our labor.
Kabir, the great poet of India said---
“Life is a field and you are born to cultivate it. And if you know how to cultivate this field you can produce anything you like. All the needs of your life can be produced in this field. All that your soul yearns after and all you need is to be gotten from the field, if you know how to cultivate it and how to reap the fruit.”
Today I have a special request of each of you… As Native Americans might say---- let us remember the voice of the Great Spirit. Let’s dig deeper, and do more----Let us ask more of ourselves as we
meet eachother in Grace, and walk side by side, heart to heart.
Let us have more listening, more kindness, more truth, more hope and more faith as we embrace the Divine in each of us. Let us open our hearts and give generously of our resources so that aid is sent and distributed to people in need in Myanmar, China and all over the world. Even with the best aid, still it will be hard for so many have died, are suffering and displaced.
Let us ask
that all those who have ascended be received into Heaven. May those Spirits heal instantly, and take their places as angels so that they are able to support their loved ones still left in shock on Earth as they mourn their tremendous loss. Let us join all who are mourning, and suffering---everywhere on Earth.
Today let us pay attention and receive God’s message. Right now we are being called into an awakening of LOVE . We are being asked to do MORE.
Let us close with a prayer.
MotherFatherGOD/ Blessed Creator of the Universe, Have Mercy on us. Open the hearts of all beings so that we are able to send love and resources for healing and rebuilding. Show us how to have, and share an illuminated hope, and infinite faith so that all those in need in Myanmar, China, in Iraq, in Lebanon, in Sudan, in Chili, and everywhere across the Earth and the Universe feel our compassion, our concern and our love. AMEN.
