Today, it is practically impossible to go anywhere without hearing about how our country is facing a health crisis of major proportions - the prices of drugs are skyrocketing; millions of citizens go without health insurance; and a third of our population already suffers from some form of degenerative disease. While our politicians, economists, and health experts argue about how best to face this problem, few, if any, seem to have any realistic long-term solution.
is, however, an answer. It is a solution that isn't complicated, doesn't require
billions of tax dollars, and doesn't need a giant bureaucratic overseer. The
answer is... good health. If fewer people needed pills to lower blood pressure,
decrease cholesterol levels, or stimulate their love lives, think about the
impact it would have on our health-care system. If fewer people suffered from
the severe pain of arthritis, rheumatism, and other degenerative diseases, think
how much emptier doctors' offices would be. And if the incidence of cancer
started to drop sharply, consider how much less sorrow and grief there would be
in our lives.
sad truth is that health is something the majority of people in this country are
lacking. The incidence of chronic illness is at an all-time high. Just as
alarming, even among people who don't have any obvious symptoms of disease, lack
of energy seems to be epidemic. Certainly, it is the number-one complaint among
my patients, as well as the patients of my colleagues. Yet, paradoxically, at no
time in history has such a wealth of health information been available to us, as
evidenced by the abundant supply of books, newsletters, magazines, seminars, and
websites all devoted to providing health information. So why are we so unhealthy
as a nation? And, more importantly, what can be done about it?

The internet is
filled with information. Whatever the interest, choose a keyword and you will be
busy. Sometimes the references are overwhelming, and usually it is only possible
to examine a few. It is difficult to know what information to trust. On the
surface, much of what the search yields may seem quite apropos to the interest
that led to the search. But relying on such results can also result in
contradictory information and concepts that may challenge the validity or
reliability of the information sought. Even the best of researchers may not
always be able to detect the truth or the points of view that address and
satisfy the issue of concern.
In a day of
information overwhelm easily supported by the internet, it is important,
sometimes, to look for a very concentrated and authentic approach addressing a
given issue. Health is one of those issues. Whatever the interest regarding any
aspect of health, there will be a plethora of information to behold. In the case
of In Balance For Life: A Guide to Understanding and Maximizing Your Body’s
pH Factor, by Alex Guerrero, there is no need to look elsewhere for
has many years of expertise in the health field that superbly qualify him to
write what can be considered an easy-to-read, yet comprehensive approach with
information proven, again and again, to lead people to improve their level of
health. At A Better Community For All (ABC4All), we have coined the term,
“Health Height™” to designate the level of health that can be achieved in
today’s difficult and challenging world filled with contaminants that threaten
our well being. Given all the hazards facing us, as for example, those contained
in processed foods with known harmful ingredients (preservatives, color dyes,
artificial flavorings, unhealthy sweeteners, etc.) that proliferate in small and
large grocery stores and those in hazards that bombard us from just about
everywhere in the environment, modern civilization is increasingly confronted
with health challenges not so easily overcome.

When children as young as age two are given a label such as “diabetes

levels of health achieved by so many in the population can be reflected in
psychological dysfunction, sociopathic and psychopathic, even outright criminal

“A revolution has occurred. It's taken place in the Central Alternative High School. The kids now behave. The hallways aren't frantic. Even the teachers are happy.
“The school used to be out of control. Kids packed weapons. Discipline problems swamped the principal's office. But not since 1997. What happened? Did they line every inch of space with cops? Did they spray valium gas in the classrooms? Did they install metal detectors in the bathrooms? Did they build holding cells in the gym? Afraid not. In 1997, a private group called Natural Ovens began installing a healthy lunch program.
“Huh? Fast-food burgers, fries, and burritos gave way to fresh salads, vegetables "prepared with old-fashioned recipes," and whole grain bread. Fresh fruits were added to the menu. Good drinking water arrived. Vending machines were removed. As reported in a newsletter called Pure Facts, "Grades are up, truancy is no longer a problem, arguments are rare, and teachers are able to spend their time teaching.
"Principal LuAnn Coenen, who files annual reports with the state of Wisconsin, has turned in some staggering figures since 1997. Drop-outs? Students expelled? Students discovered to be using drugs? Carrying weapons? Committing suicide? Every category has come up ZERO. Every year. Mary Bruyette, a teacher, states, "I don't have to deal with daily discipline issues. I don't have disruptions in class or the difficulties with student behavior I experienced before we started the food program." One student asserted, "Now that I can concentrate I think it's easier to get along with people" What a concept---eating healthier food increases concentration.
“Principal Coenen sums it up: "I can't buy the argument that it's too costly for schools to provide good nutrition for their students. I found that one cost will reduce another. I don't have the vandalism. I don't have the litter. I don't have the need for high security.”
“Miracle in Wisconsin,” can and must be repeated over and over. There will
result healthier students, healthier teachers, healthier families and,
ultimately, healthier communities which benefit from such improvements, one
person at a time, just as Guerrero points out. To this end, A
Better Community For All (ABC4All) has collaborated with Huck-Fin
Environmental Education (HFEE)
to create a comprehensive, community-based solution to work on correcting such
Health, Exercise and Nutrition for All (CHEN4All).”
In Balance for
Life will be required reading for CHEN4All students, parents, teachers,
administrators, and everyone in the community who will support this effort. In
just 162 pages, Alex Guerrero teaches us all we need to know. It is not
necessary, though it may be helpful, for everyone to consult with health care
professionals. Following the guidelines offered in this book will, consistently,
lead to health improvements. The result? Repeated miracles of behavior
improvement, with less in the way of emotional disturbance and dysfunctional
On page 101, the
conclusion of the chapter on “Getting Back in Balance” reads:
“…the over-acidity that plagues our nation today has its roots in the many acidifying foods that make up the standard American diet. By simply changing your diet to one that emphasizes alkalizing foods and following the guidelines presented in this chapter, you can significantly reduce the toxic burden of acidosis both easily and safely.”
result? “Greater energy and freedom from disease symptoms,” an achievement
leading to “a turnaround in health by making simple dietary changes.” Is it
worth it? The obvious answer: Only if you truly want to be healthy, decrease
health-care costs, live longer and better.
The sooner such goals become part of everyone’s consciousness, the more
likely Guerrero’s prediction can come true:
page 160, Alex Guerrero states: “…once you start to experience the health
benefits of this eating plan, you will never want to eat any other way.”
His final conclusion (p.
161) says it all:
“In the Introduction, I told you that I had the answer to our nation’s health-care crisis. Now that you have read this book, I hope you can see that we have the power to prevent the misery caused by chronic illness and disease. And we can also slow down and reverse the cost of maintaining our present health-care system—a system that is failing us. But this is the big picture. In order to make this happen, we have to begin with ourselves—one person at a time, one family at a time. the real answer to this crisis is what you can do about your own health, not what others can do when you are sick.”

“...the main thing that I have to say is that I like the overall layout of the book, the info presented is informative and very doable for ALL people--both vegetarians and non vegetarians, which is very important in our world today.
